At one time or another everybody wants to have a skill that they can show off in front of people – whether it's performing magic tricks at a party, playing sport in front of hundreds of adoring supporters or being up on stage ready to stage dive into the audience.

For musicians the art goes further than just playing gigs. Lyrics written generations ago still have a great affect these days and it's this ability to associate and engage with a listener that raises music above other art forms.

Unlike modern art or classics, it doesn't take a massive brain to realise what's going on – every individual on the planet can appreciate music. While some musicians are heralded as grand, there are also many others who are just average joes. While it may take something a bit phenomenal to be able to master a number of instruments, to be able to play the guitar it just takes a bit of musical knowledge and a lot of dedication.

Many wannabe guitar players give up in the first few months and if you can get through that period of time you're well on your way to being a hit a the next social event you attend.

To get started, you need to find a few basic songs to learn. The biggest mistake people make is picking riffs that are too challenging for a beginner or picking a song that they don't enjoy playing.

Picking an easy to play song that is enjoyable to listen to is not difficult. Virtually every major band has at least one song that can be mastered by anyone. Take the Beatles – with 13 studio albums you can't expect everything to be intricate and complex. The novice should take a look at Help or Eleanor Rigby – two of their most famous songs – that almost anyone can pick up in a few lessons.

Bob Dylan fans may be more interested in playing Lay Lady Lay or Blowin' In The Wind. Again, two well known songs that turn out to be easy guitar songs to learn. Those interested in more recent music might be keen to find out that REM's Man On The Moon and Losing My Religion are very good starting points.

Once you've picked a couple of easy to learn guitar songs the rest is down to you. Begin by playing a couple of times a week and once you think you've got the basic musical rhythm play along to a CD and see if you can keep in time with the pros. In just a month or two you'll be able to play a couple of the public's favourites so when you go to your imminent you can be the one leading the sing-along and getting all the looks of wonder from the rest of the party goers.
